The Heart of Our Foundation
Real stories. Real people. Real purpose.
The McShin Foundation is Virginia’s leading nonprofit Recovery Community Organization (RCO), dedicated to helping individuals and families overcome Substance Use Disorders through authentic peer-to-peer support. Founded in 2004 by people in long-term recovery, McShin was built on the belief that recovery is not only possible but powerful. Through housing, education, and a strong recovery community, we provide the tools and support people need to heal, grow, and reclaim their lives. Our mission is rooted in compassion, lived experience, and a deep commitment to saving lives, reducing stigma, and creating pathways to lasting recovery.
Our Model Recovery Community Organization (RCO)
The McShin Foundation is a Recovery Community Organization (RCO). An RCO is defined in-part as having resources such as: Halfway Houses, Transitional Recovery Houses, Opiate Detox, and being connected with alcohol and drug rehabs, substance abuse treatment and aftercare. We offer a social model recovery program that implements Peer-to-peer delivered Recovery Support Services (PRSS).
The McShin Model
A Peer-Driven Pathway to Lasting Recovery
Founded in 2004, The McShin Foundation is a full-service Recovery Community Organization (RCO) committed to serving individuals with substance use disorders as well as their families. While providing housing and the tools for recovering individuals to create positive lifestyles, we aim to spread the word of recovery and educate families, communities, and government regardingSUDs as well as reduce the negative outlook attached to them. McShin is the only RCO in Virginiaaccredited by the Council on Accreditation of Peer Recovery Support Services (CAPRSS).
Our Story
How Two People Turned Recovery Into a Movement
John Shinholser and Carol McDaid founded The McShin Foundation in 2004. John and Carol remain committed to helping individuals and families find hope and begin their recovery journey. Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church welcomed McShin in a year later, offering basement office space when few others believed in the vision. From those two small offices, McShin has grown into a thriving organization with a 15,000-square-foot recovery center and more than 150 recovery residence beds across Richmond and the surrounding areas. Today, under the leadership of CEO Honesty Liller, McShin continues to grow and thrive, carrying their vision forward and shaping the future of recovery for generations to come.
